How WOA Can Re-Humanize SOA

Question: Why do you think SOA has become so siloed in IT? Wasn’t it supposed to solve the silo problem?
Matsumura: Yes. I think it really reflects a lack of - I hate to use the “G” word here - “governing,” in the sense that if you really look at, for example, the OASIS reference model definition of SOA, it says SOA is basically a paradigm for organizing and utilizing distributed capabilities, which may be under the control of different ownership domains.
In some ways, people were a little bit seduced into SOA because the question is so deceptively simple and attractive: We have so much redundancy, why don’t we just wave the SOA wand and it will magically disappear, and all our systems will be consolidated, and they’ll be affordable? If you’re sitting in the finance department, that sounds wonderful. I spoke with one customer that used to have 30 ERP systems, and now they are down to 18.
