SOAP vs. REST

Why do you prefer one over the other? Obviously we've relied heavily on SOAP for our Web Services portfolio...

Re: SOAP vs. REST

REST

  • The more clients the better
  • User-driven interactions via forms
  • Few operations (generic interface) on many resources
  • URI: Consistent naming mechanism for resources
  • Focus on scalability and performance of large scale distributed hypermedia systems
  • Composition with Mashups

    SOAP

    • Activity/Service oriented – actions that may be performed orthogonally to the resources upon which they act
    • Services for cross-enterprise trading
    • Selected set of clients (visibility and access controlled by contracts)
